LEGAL AND CERTIFIED TRANSLATION
Sworn, certified or official translation: in many countries translations must be certified by a sworn translator in order to be accepted by official bodies as valid.
Sworn translators are authorised to translate from a foreign language into an official language of the country and vice versa. In Spain they must be authorised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Spanish; the Catalan Government for Catalan; the Galician Government for Galician; and the Basque Institute of Public Administration for Basque.
A sworn translation has the official translator’s signature and stamp on it and comes with a certificate stating that it is a true and complete translation of the original document. Sworn translations can be delivered on paper, stamped and signed in blue ink by the professional, or in digital format with the sworn translator’s electronic signature.
Documents that generally have to be submitted with a sworn translation for approval or recognition include:
- Degree certificates and academic transcripts
- Criminal record certificates
- Wills
- Notarial deeds and powers of attorney
- Divorce certificates and judgments
- Patents
- Adoption files
- Contracts, powers of attorney and deeds
- Entries in official registers
- Statements of claim and court judgments

- Auditor’s reports.
- Marriage, birth, marital status and death certificates
- Financial statements
Sworn interpreting is simultaneous, consecutive or liaison interpreting that has official validity, provided by a sworn interpreter in situations where a legal guarantee of accuracy and confidentiality is required.
This service is needed in situations such as:
- Trials and other court proceedings
- Signing in notary offices
- Signing contracts
- Appearing before official bodies
The sworn interpreter guarantees that the communication between the parties is true, accurate and in accordance with the law.
